Stage painting is where I got my start in scenic art and the majority of my experience in stage painting still lies in my schooling. I have served as paint charge for multiple theatrical productions put on by the Gainesville Theatre Alliance. I spent significant time working with metallic paints, as well as wood-graining surfaces, especially flooring.

Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (GTA 2023)

I was paint charge for this show. Having a steampunk theme we used many different varieties of metallic paints. This was one of the first times I got to do a lot of weathering for a large project. Here I both dry-brushed and sponged the gears that were later suspended to give them a used look. Another favorite bit was the floor; The designer wanted to give the appearance of gears on the on the ground. To achieve this effect I laid some of the larger gears we had down on the ground and sprayed a wash over them to leave layered silhouettes.

The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe (GTA 2023)

For this show I primarily worked on the backgrounds. This show includes a season change from winter to summer. To achieve this we painted the backgrounds of the winter scenes on silks that would be removed mid show from the set pieces they laid over to reveal their summer looks.

Pygmalion (GTA 2023)

This was one of the first shows I had any involvement in painting for. Here I primarily helped paint the floor. Our technique involved marking out the dimensions of the boards in chalk, spraying the floor with water, and spattering a darker paint over the wet floor. Then we took paintbrushes on bamboo sticks and dragged the paint along the floor following the chalk markings.

The Crucible (GTA 2024)

The Crucible was the second show I paint charged for. This show involved a much more minimalist set than the previous shows I had worked on and involved a lot less in the paint department. I used a similar spatter and drag technique to the one I used on Pygmalion for the platforms. Unlike the flooring, to achieve a wood grain look on the furniture, I used a dry-brushing technique.
